        Ring Out The Good News

February 2013

Greetings!

Whenever I work with children, who are preparing for their first celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, I try to help them understand the meaning of "the penance" they are asked to perform as part of that sacrament. I am convinced that many adults look on this penance as a kind of "punishment" for the sins they have committed. There have been times when I have given a penance to someone in the sacrament and their response has been the question: "Is that all?" They obviously expect that a serious sin demands a painful penance. However, a penance is not a punishment and I want to be sure that the children understand this. Jesus alone has accepted the punishment that our sins deserve through his cross. No further punishment is needed. I want the children to understand that the "penance" is a simple action (a sign) by which we show God, and ourselves, that we are ready to act with faith and love as we seek to turn away from acts of selfishness and hate.

As we enter into the penitential season of Lent, it is important that we all recognize that Lent is not a time to punish ourselves for our sins. The passion and death of Jesus has eliminated the punishment that we actually deserve for our sins. Lent has nothing to do with self-punishment. The prayer, fasting and almsgiving of Lent should not be viewed as a way to make our lives painful or miserable. There is no benefit in being unhappy.

Lent is a time, set aside for us each year, to exercise the discipline and self-control that will help us to make changes in our lives and in our attitudes, changes that will help us to be more faithful followers of Jesus and more joyful men and women.

  MassforLife MARCH FOR LIFE RELEFCTIONS
by Alicia Curti and Leah Preslicka

The 2013 March for Life had a profound impact on me. Prior to this, I had never experienced such a powerful expression of faith and courage by such a large group of people. Marching with half a million other prolife teens and young adults on a snowy January day kindled a prolife fire within my heart. While I have always been against abortion, I now clearly see that there is no legitimate justification for the murder of America's children, and I believe that my generation will end abortion with the help of God.

national cathedral The courage and boldness of participants in the March for Life really struck me. Abortion is a controversial issue in our s
ociety, but none of these people paid any mind to the opinions of others. I came to the realization that courage comes from God: if it is His will that something be done, then it will be done. Since God obviously wills killing to end, I believe that abortion will end, but it will not be easy. I am truly inspired by the confidence of all participants in the March for Life. It is a huge sacrifice to take off multiple days of school or work, travel across the country, and march in cold weather. It follows that people would not do this if they did not believe that their actions make a difference.

Year of Faith

PARISH COUNCIL CORNER
By Maggie Stack
If you read the bulletin this week you will notice there are no less than five opportunities to
deepen your faith through personal study or group learning. There are three items that offer a quick way to
grow your understanding of our faith through reflection or trivia. There are ministry meetings and social gatherings with opportunities to share our faith. There are certainly many options to achieve the Parish Council goal to
'grow in faith as a parish as we renew our commitment to holiness'. As we enter the Lenten Season we would ask you to consider how you can enhance your experience during this holy time. You can attend the Lenten Retreat on February 23rd. .

Is there a ministry you have been wanting to learn more about? Check out the Discipleship tab on the Parish website. Would you like to join in fellowship with other members of the St. Michael family? Come to the Fat Tuesday celebration on February 12 at 6:00 in Archangel's Hall! If you have recommendations outside of those already available please contact a Parish Council member to discuss.

VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION

FAT TUESDAY CELEBRATION

FEBRUARY 12TH

As a member of the Discipleship Committee I was so excited last year with the success of our Fat Tuesday/Volunteer Appreciation event. I was very happy that we had over 200 parishioners gathered in one place to celebrate volunteerism at St. Michael and have the opportunity to experience true fellowship with each other.

I give credit to the Adult Faith Formation committee who originally had the vision to develop this tradition in our Parish. The concept of bringing the parish together to celebrate volunteerism, experience fellowship and to contemplate on the upcoming Lenten season is a perfect mix of purpose to continue and grow this celebration!

Plan on joining us at 6:00 p.m. on

February 12th in Archangels Hall to king cakecelebrate "Volunteerism at St. Michael", and Fat Tuesday.

Once again food, beverage and fun will be provided free to all in attendance. The purpose of this event is to honor the volunteers at St. Michael with acknowledgement of all that they have done for the Church over the last year, with dinner and a small gift. We will provide Lenten Resources for all to enhance the spiritual journey this Lent.  The event is open to all parishioners of any age and crafts for the children will be provided.
